This New England counted cross stitch pattern entitled Wood Island Lighthouse shows a lovely lighthouse and quaint little cottage on a hill of seagrass.  This lighthouse is located in Saco Bay.  It is also the second oldest lighthouse in the State of Maine.  It is a very impressive lighthouse with a beacon that flashes green and white and a light measures 71 feet above water.  In 1808, President Thomas Jefferson established the building of this lighthouse.  Residential buildings to house the keepers were erected in 1858.  Thomas Orcutt filled the role as keeper for 19 years and lived there with his dog who was famous for ringing the fog bell by tugging on the rope.  The lighthouse is known to be haunted due to a murder/suicide that occurred between a squatter and a deputy on the grounds in 1890.  Only full cross stitches are used in our patterns. No blended colors are used. We only use an abundance of solid colors as it produces a more realistic effect.
