She was an English painter, born in 1855 and died in 1919, who came up with the later phase of the Pre-Raphaelite movement and then worked her way through Aestheticism and Symbolism without ever quite settling. Her subjects are spiritual, mythological and allegorical, and scholars have read a good deal of spiritualist and feminist meaning into the metaphors she leaned on. What she did later matters just as much. The Second Boer War and the First World War pushed her toward openly pacifist work, so a painter often filed under decorative Victorian romance turns out to have had something firm to say about war.
