Frederick L. Cavally drew teddy bears doing entirely human things, and that small joke is what carries his work so well into counted cross stitch.
He is remembered for Mother Goose's Teddy Bears, published in 1907, a book of illustrations in which bears fish, court one another, work at their sums and study themselves in the mirror. Beyond that book, Cavally is not a name the art histories say much about. The pictures have outlasted the biography, which happens more often than people expect, and the bears themselves have been reprinted ever since.
