Carlo Dolci painted the same handful of devotional faces over and over until he had them exactly as he wanted them, and that patient, highly finished quality is what carries so well into counted cross stitch.
He was an Italian painter, born in 1616 and died in 1686, and he spent nearly all of his working life in Florence. Religious subjects were his ground: the Blue Madonna, the grieving Mater Dolorosa, St. Catherine of Siena, the Adoration of the Kings. Rather than move on once a picture was finished, Dolci returned to his successful compositions again and again, producing version after version for buyers who wanted one of their own. It is an unusual thing to be remembered for, but it says something about how much people wanted these images on their walls, and Baroque devotional painting has rarely felt so intimate.
