George Henry Durrie painted the American countryside under snow, and those quiet farm and village scenes have long outlived the century that made them, which is part of why they suit counted cross stitch so well.
Durrie was an American landscape painter, born in 1820 and died in 1863. Winter was his subject above all others, and the farmyards, roads and schoolhouses he returned to again and again reached a far wider audience than his canvases ever could once Currier and Ives began issuing them as lithographic prints. The paintings sold steadily afterward; Durrie himself did not live to see how thoroughly his snow scenes would come to stand for a whole idea of rural America.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Jacob Jan Coenraad Spohler, Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, and Ludwig Munthe.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, George Henry Durrie art prints are easy to find.
