Lagrenee, Louis-Jean-Francois

Louis-Jean-Francois Lagrenee built his reputation on mythological scenes like Mars and Venus, where gods behave like people, and that human quality is what carries the work over into counted cross stitch.

He was French, born in 1725 and died in 1805, and he trained under Carle van Loo before winning the Grand Prix de Rome for painting in 1749. Election to the Academie royale de peinture et de sculpture followed in 1755. Lagrenee worked in the rococo manner of his day, painting portraits alongside the allegories and mythological subjects he returned to again and again. Painting ran in the family too: his younger brother, Jean-Jacques Lagrenee, followed the same path. The two names turn up together often enough that they are sometimes confused, though Louis-Jean-Francois was the elder and the first of them to make his mark.
