Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones spent a career on gods, grails and angels rather than on the world outside his window, and that appetite for legend is what carries his work so well into counted cross stitch.
He was an English painter and designer, born in 1833 and died in 1898, working in the manner and subject matter of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and later counted among the Symbolists. Myth and religion were his territory. Odin turns up in his work, so does the failure of Gawain from the Holy Grail tapestries, and so does Christ meeting the woman of Samaria at the well. He was made a baronet, which tells you something about how seriously Victorian Britain came to take him.
Dante Gabriel Rossetti was a strong influence on him, and Burne-Jones in turn influenced John Roddam Spencer Stanhope. John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt worked the same ground.
