Etienne-Adolphe Piot spent a career painting young women, and those faces carry over into counted cross stitch with the same directness they have on canvas.
Piot was French, born in 1831 and died in 1910, and he is remembered almost entirely for his portraits. Titles like The Cherry Girl, Soap Bubbles and The Fair Spinner give a fair sense of what occupied him: single figures, often girls or young women, caught at some small everyday occupation rather than posed in state. He showed work in the Paris Salons across a remarkable stretch of years, from 1850 all the way to 1909, which means he was still exhibiting as an old man in a Paris that had changed beyond recognition since he started.
