John Collier made his living painting the faces of real people, then turned around and painted Lilith and Lady Godiva with the same seriousness, and it is those imagined figures that have carried his work into counted cross stitch.
He was English, born in 1850 and died in 1934, and one of the most sought-after portrait painters of his generation. Alongside that steady professional work he produced history paintings, most of them invented portraits of one or two figures drawn from literature, myth, or the past, such as Queen Guinevere and the enchantress Armida. He was educated at Eton, studied in Paris with Jean-Paul Laurens, and went on to the Munich Academy in 1875. Both of his marriages were to daughters of Thomas Henry Huxley.
Collier studied under Sir Edward John Poynter. Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones and John Everett Millais painted in the same Pre-Raphaelite territory.
