He was a founder of the Royal Academy of Arts and served as its first president, and George III knighted him in 1769. Lucy Peltz has called him the leading portrait artist of the 18th century, and he is still described as the master who revolutionized British art.
Reynolds taught Joseph Mallord William Turner and influenced Thomas Lawrence. Jacques-Louis David and Angelica Kauffmann were fellow Neoclassical painters.
