Charles-François Jalabert was a French Academic painter who lived from 1819 to 1901. He trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and was a devoted student of Paul Delaroche, working in both Paris and Rome. Although he never won the Grand Prix, he earned the Second Rome Prize and later found success with portraits for high society, including the exiled Orléans family. His famous works include large-scale dramatic pieces like The Plague of Thebes and mythological scenes such as Nymphs Listening to the Songs of Orpheus.
Jalabert's style is quintessentially Academic, characterized by subtle, refined detail, beautiful draftsmanship, and subjects drawn from history, mythology, or religious narratives.
