This gemstone beauty counted cross stitch pattern entitled Opal designed by Tracey Marvel Kramer showcases the Opal gemstone and how fabulous its iridescence looks on our model. The name opal comes from the Sanskrit word “upala” which means precious stone, and it is the birthstone for the month of October. It is a unique gemstone whose appearance is a pearlized white; however, other colors are reflected in the stone. Opals reflecting the color red are rare and quite expensive while those reflecting splashes of blue or green are more common and less expensive. During medieval times, blond-haired maidens all wore opal necklaces because they felt it would prevent their hair from fading or darkening in color. Opals are mentioned in the Bible in reference to the breastplate God instructed to be made for Aaron with rows of gems that represent the 12 tribes of the sons of Israel. (Exodus 28: 19-21). Opals are found in Brazil, USA, Australia, Mexico, Slovakia, Canada and Czech Republic. The symbolic traits associated with Opals are good luck, faith, hope and purity.
