This fine art counted cross stitch pattern entitled Passer-Payez designed from a painting by Louis-Leopold Boilly shows man with a long board with wheels placing the board on the street for the purpose of charging the families a small fee so that their ladies can cross the street by walking on the plank without soiling the hems of their gowns.  A Parisian family of lower class on the streets for an outing is doing just that.  Umbrellas have been employed due to the recent rain showers.  The afternoon rain has left the streets quite muddy, and the older women who are wearing longer gowns are lifting the hems of their garments to avoid getting them soiled.  The younger girl is wearing a much shorter dress than ankle length and is able to avoid getting her hemline soiled.  However, as the little girl in that era grows older, her hemline will be much lower as it is fashionable for ladies at that age to wear ankle length gowns and nothing above as that would be quite scandalous!  Only full cross stitches are used in our patterns. No blended colors are used. We only use an abundance of solid colors as it produces a more realistic effect.
