Johan Laurentz Jensen (often referred to as J. L. Jensen) was a Danish artist who lived from 1800 to 1856. He is widely recognized as the leading painter of floral still lifes during the Danish Golden Age (approximately 1810–1850) and is often called the "Father of Danish Flower Painting." Jensen specialized exclusively in the still life genre, studying under the influential Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg and later refining his craft in Paris and Rome. He also served as the head artist at the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory from 1825.
Jensen's style is marked by brilliant, pure colors, a high degree of finish, and masterful naturalism. He revived the tradition of 17th-century Dutch flower painting in Denmark, creating lavish, carefully composed bouquets in vases (often Greek or classical in style) or baskets. His paintings are rich in variety, featuring both native Danish plants (like wild flowers and strawberries) and exotic fruits and blossoms. These works often carry both decorative appeal and symbolic meaning, reflecting the Romantic-era appreciation for nature. Our cross-stitch patterns based on Jensen's still lifes are a joy to stitch, allowing you to focus on the intricate detail and vibrant color shifts of roses, lilies, and lush foliage, resulting in a piece that looks like a miniature, highly detailed oil painting.
