Artist Spotlight: Jacopo Amigoni

Jacopo Amigoni (c. 1682–1752) was a quintessential master of the Rococo period, renowned for his "international style" that brought Venetian elegance to the royal courts of Europe. Born in Naples but trained in the vibrant traditions of Venice, Amigoni’s career was defined by prestigious travels and high-profile patrons, including King George II of England and King Ferdinand VI of Spain, for whom he served as Court Painter. His work is the embodiment of the Rococo spirit—moving away from the heavy drama of the Baroque toward a lighter, more graceful aesthetic characterized by a luminous, "gem-like" palette of pastels and soft azure blues. Famous for his sumptuous portraits and mythological "parlour works" like Venus and Adonis or his iconic depictions of the singer Farinelli, Amigoni excelled at rendering the shimmer of jewels and the fluid drape of silk. For the needlework artist, a Jacopo Amigoni cross-stitch project is an invitation to work with delicate color transitions and airy compositions. Each stitch recreates the theatrical grace and courtly sophistication of the 18th century, resulting in a finished piece that feels both historically grand and effortlessly charming.
