This fine art counted cross stitch pattern entitled Mariana in the South designed from a painting by John William Waterhouse shows a young woman who had been jilted by her lover and has now been destined to spend the rest of her days in confinement on a moated grange, which is a metaphor for unrequited love. The artist came up with the subject for this scene from Shakespeare's poem entitled Measure for Measure. In this scene, Mariana is seen on her knees in front of a mirror jostling her hair from the back of her neck in shear frustration and anguish when she contemplates her situation of despair and the finality of her future. She intermittently prays for her lover's return. On the floor near the mirror are old letters she received from her lover in the past, but now they are empty reminders of the love she thought she had. Only full cross stitches are used in our patterns. No blended colors are used. We only use an abundance of solid colors as it produces a more realistic effect.
