Pierre Joseph Redoute drew roses and lilies with such care that botanists could identify the plant and everyone else simply wanted the picture on the wall, which is why his flowers suit counted cross stitch so naturally.
He was a painter and botanist from the Austrian Netherlands, born in 1759 and died in 1840, and much of his working life was spent in France. The watercolors he made at the Château de Malmaison are the ones that carried his name: roses above all, along with lilies, irises and other flowers, many of them published afterwards as large colored stipple engravings. That combination of exact botany and floral painting of real beauty earned him the nickname the Raphael of flowers, and he has been called the greatest botanical illustrator of all time. Two centuries on, his roses are still the ones people picture when they think of a rose in a book.
